I grew up in the city of Boston. As a young adult I moved to the southern coast of Massachusetts and became more and more involved with outdoor activities and, surprisingly, farming on the small scale. As my love of nature has grown, so has its influence on my art. I often feature flowers, trees, animals, insects and broad landscapes in my work. I have spent the past 10 years focusing on ceramic art and pottery making. Before that, I was primarily a painter and clay sculptor.
Once I discovered the pottery wheel and all it could open to me, I realized I had found my artistic home. My sculptural pieces are made on both the pottery wheel and by hand, sometimes both. I approach each lump of clay as an adventure. I work in earthenware for the most part because it enables me to use bolder and brighter colors. I try to evoke a sense of motion in the vase or bowl through design on the piece itself, or through added on sculpted elements that make the user physically move the piece to see everything more clearly. When I’m working with clay, I often forget where I am and lose track of time. The peace and pure joy it has brought is immeasurable.
Living in Maine now, I draw so much influence from my surroundings. The mountains and forest are just an endless array of fauna; and the ocean and lakes are living sculptures. No matter what season or the weather, I am always inspired to incorporate the natural beauty into my products.
